History  of   BSADA

BSADA was launched in February 2016. The brain-child of Kinitra Brooks and John Jennings, BSADA came to fruition with the efforts of Chris Guzman, Jonathan Martinez, Alexis McGee, Susana Ramirez, and Stephanie Schoellman.

These six graduate students from University of Texas at San Antonio followed the lead of Dr. Brooks and Dr. Jennings and chronicled the 3rd AstroBlackness conference (#AstroBlackness) themed "Planet Deep South" (#planetdeepsouthJSU) in Jackson, MS.

History of AstroBlackness Conference

The AstroBlackness conference began February 13, 2014. AstroBlackness was originally carried out in Los Angeles, California on the campus of Loyola Marymount University. This conference, Astro-Blackness: Remaking and (Re)mixing Black Identity, consisted of a two-day conference focusing on literature, media, and film.

AstroBlackness continues to grow and (re)form. The second conference remained at Loyola Marymount University. On March 13, 2015, AstroBlackness II, took the opportunity to focus on constructions of Blackness from aspects of the surreal, gothic, fantastic, and techno-cybernetic.

Planet Deep South, the third AstroBlackness conference, was taken up on the Jackson State University Campus in Jackson, Mississippi. This conference took place February 24,2016-February 26, 2016 and focused on conversations and intersections of the South, constructions of Blackness, and AfroFuturism.
